“Villa Blauwduin” is an imposing thatched mansion on the most exclusive location in the Netherlands: the Zwaluwenweg in Aerdenhout. This street has been in the top 5 most elite streets in the Netherlands for decades. For many people “Villa Blauwduin’ is a beacon of peace and recognition.
In 1853, the first waterworks in the Netherlands ran out of the dunes from Haarlem to Amsterdam. Residents were allowed to fill a bucket with dune water for 4 cents. The availability of clean water increased tea consumption and especially the welfare of the family Bierens de Haan. Well-known doctors of the time helped by prescribing tea:
“… which does not corrupt the taste, which does not ignite lusts, nor which weighs down the mind … .. whose playsier is not dire, neither for the mind nor for the body”
Surrounded by a private domain of no less than 23,185 m², this country house is ideal for residents, families or corporates who are looking for a special combination of architectural beauty, pride, privacy, tradition, impress, safety, modest, aristocratic, powerful and romance.
As soon as the gate opens to the owner, you come face to face with an iconic house designed and built in 1928 under the supervision of the acclaimed Haarlem architect Harm Korringa for Johannes Abraham Bierens de Haan (1883-1958). Architecturally, the country house is a combination of the well-known English country house style and the Tudor and Neotudor style that have their origins in the time of the Tudor dynasty. An English flowering period between 1485 and 1603.
Villa Blauwduin has a spacious 800 m² living space (1,123 m² total). 19 rooms, including 5 bedrooms, 4 fireplaces and 3 bathrooms, an indoor garage for 2 cars, a detached guest house of 112 m² with an indoor garage for 4 cars. There is even a thatched stable building on the estate.
The very spacious forecourt is dominated by a monumental fountain. At the beginning of the 19th century, a niece of the family admired in her holiday diary: “The Bierens de Haan family has a fountain that is filled with pure tap water!”
Standing in front of the country house, the staggered brick facade stands out. The outer wall of the first floor is partly covered with half-timbering. In combination with the stained glass windows and row windows with shutters on the ground floor, this gives the house the characteristic, rural look.
The famous garden and landscape architect Leonard Springer is responsible for the park-like “Mixed Style” garden that surrounds the mansion. A characteristic of the mixed style are the straight-lined garden parts close to the house. These axes of symmetry merge into a landscape garden. Springer was also known for having gardens harmonize well with the surroundings. Therefor the owner can also enjoy a walk in their own forest plot that flows smoothly into the vast meadows that the domain includes.
In 2011, the current owners carried out a major renovation. Monique Hamelink, who followed the school of architecture at the University of Reading, has supervised the renovation where no expense has been spared. Completely in style of the house, exclusive fabrics, materials and luxury equipment have been used. The house is in perfect condition both inside and out, with facilities and comfort you would expect from this prestigious country house. An exceptional living pleasure in a unique and extremely attractive ambiance.
Villa Blauwduin is equipped with the advanced KNX Domotica system, with which almost all functions in the house can be controlled, such as lighting, curtains, the security installation with cameras and even the fountain in the forecourt. By means of so-called electronic ‘loops’ in the ground, you can immediately trace unwanted visitors and, if necessary, seek salvation in the in-house panic room with independently functioning communication equipment.
The massive wooden entry door opens into the majestic hall of the house, with elegant crystal chandeliers and a classic black and white checkered granite and Italian marble tiled floor.
Almost immediately you will find yourself in the right wing of the house where the study room / library is situated with fireplace and covered terrace. You can receive a business visit here without them going directly through the private rooms.
In the left wing of the house, where the service rooms used to be, is the beautiful kitchen with the informal dining room and a passage to the stylish family dining room with beautiful marble fireplace. The white kitchen in modern, country style is fully customized and an absolute dream for anyone who loves cooking, eating and stylish reception. The floor is a combination of Belgian bluestone with oak wood under the dining tables, the huge kitchen island has a granite counter top including a Miele induction hob, a teppanyaki and a wok. The wine fridge and double fridge with ice drawers are from Gaggenau. With a steam oven, two hot air ovens, three dishwashers and a silent Gutmann extraction system, the dream of every cooking enthusiast.
Adjacent to the formal dining room you will find the first living room, also with marble fireplace, high windows with sliding shutters, wood paneling, characteristic window seats and a tasteful conservatory.
The main living room with beautiful fireplace and bay window is centrally located in the country house and offers a wide view over the garden and the meadows belonging to the domain.
From the spacious and bright hallway you walk through the impressive oak staircase to the first floor. The master bedroom (approx. 96 m² + balcony) has a spacious walk-in closet (24 m²) with custom cabinets and a very luxurious bathroom with freestanding bath, a hammam with Dornbracht rain shower, solarium, fragrance and color therapy and a neck massage shower.
There are two bedrooms and a beautiful second bathroom with rain shower, toilet and design washbasins including touchscreen audio. A staircase leads to the second floor with two bedrooms (25 m² and 12 m²), a shared bathroom and the laundry and ironing room.
Above the entire house is a completely renovated, but not classified, loft of 140 m², with lots of light through 2 dormer windows. Here you can realize a spacious office space or three to four spacious bedrooms. All pipes and connections for an extra bathroom are present and there is already a toilet room.
The indoor garage with carport is accessible from the kitchen and can accommodate two cars, plus two under the carport. The garage even has a oil change pit that is now covered with glass.
Tinkering with a classic car is enticing. Above the garage is a comfortable and very spacious studio apartment for a resident concierge, au pair or perhaps one of the children or guests.
To the west of the mansion is a detached, also thatched service house / guest apartment of 112 m² with two floors and an underground garage for several cars. This space is also perfect for use as a (art)studio. The country house is also equipped with a wine cellar air-conditioned by Eurocave and many additional facilities.
